Default 2003 S10 4.3 engine rattle - 05-07-2007 , 03:53 PM

On my 2003 S10 4.3 liter (52,000miles) when I accelerate around 2 to 3
thousand rpm's I get a rattle. I can put into park and slowly run up to the
1800 rpm area and hear it. It sounds similiar to pre ign noise. Could this
be the timing chain tensioner? I asked the dealer about this before it went
out of warranty and he said it was probably a rattling sheet metal componet
somewhere. It has been doing this all along-never any better or worse.
Thanks for any help.

There is no tensioner on timing chain. Noises like this can be hard to
find. Without hearing it I would suggest you look for loose shields
around spark plugs and loose clamps or brackets on exhaust. It could
be a baffle in a muffler or CAT too. Check water pump for slop and the
clutch fan too. Also does it change sound when A/C is on or off?

don't care ...after 40 years of apple pie and Chevrolet, I trying something
else.

My 2003 S-10 ZR-2 started buzzing and rattling a couple of years ago. It
happens worst right at 1500 rpm, but can also be heard at around 3000. The
culprit is the metal bands that hold the heat shield on the muffler. They
both came loose.

I stuck a small stainless steel bolt under both bands and that solved the
problem for a while. Eventually one of the bands snapped. I replaced it
with a length of copper wire twisted tight. Sooner or later the other one
will snap and I will do the same fix.

Nine warranty repairs, a starter just 2 weeks after warranty expired and
assorted other small problems (flaky wiper control, anyone?) ... The next
truck won't be a Chevy.

Bill,

I just finished repairing my funky wiper control. That again is another
long standing GM trouble...Take the circuit board out of the wiper motor
and resolder all the connections on the board, it will then work.
I had to do this with my 77 full size pickup, my 93 Blazer, and also
my 2003 s-10....take a look at your hoses that run to the oil cooler,
mine had to be replaced just like my 93!! Quality...

The new ones will do the same thing. I take the originals to a hose
supply shop. They remove the fitting ends from the originals, then
fasten them to new steel braid line and NEVER deal with them leaking
again. The best thing about it, the cost is cheaper to have them
custom made verses replacing them from the dealer.

Try an oil change. Use Castrol brand oil. My last Blazer had the
4.3, and it sounded like someone was hitting the frame with a
hammer from below. At idle, warm engine. Castrol was the only oil
that quieted the thunk.

Default funky wiper control - 05-16-2007 , 08:06 AM

My wipers on my 98 S10 Blazer will stop in various positions.
Usually right where I need to see. I may have to do this fix.
