Default 97 Blazer Headlight Issues - 01-06-2009 , 05:09 PM

Hello All,

OK, here it goes, gonna try to explain this one! I've had a headlight
issue for about a year now. It first started showing by clicking the
relays in the glove box and flickering the DLR indicator on the dash
when I turned headlight on. So fist I just removed the relay for DLR and
all was OK minus DLR's. I finally bought a new relay and replaced it.
All seemed fine again for a while. Well is started again last month but
worse. For a while if I tuned HL switch on and off I would work fine.
Then I started riding with the emergency break on (one click) disabling
DLR's. After a few day I noticed my main headlight started flickering
off and on. Now all I have are DLR's and running lights, no headlights
at all(low or high.)

I'm thinking light switch but sure would like some of you guy opinion. I
have some hand issues so I'd really like to go at this once if posable.

Thanks for any who reply.

HAPPY NEW YEARS TO YOU ALL!

John

That could be the main switch OR the dimmer in the column. I would pull
the trim and bypass the main switch and see what you get then. If you
have all the lights and they switch beams it is the main switch. If not
it's the multifunction switch in the column.

I would bet it’s the turn signal switch or a broken wire in the column.
Have seen that before. Time to wiggle stuff around and see what happens.

Cheers

H\What do you mean dimmer on the column? The dimmer control it to the
right of the light switch on my vehicle.

No, the headlight control is INSIDE the multifunction switch inside the
steering column. That is the switch that changes from high to low beam
when you pull the lever. If it fails the power to both high and low beam
relays is lost and you have only the DRLs which do not pass through the
switch.
The control you are looking at dims the dash display and turns on the
interior light if rotated far enough.

Ohhh! OK gotcha. Well if it is that it sounds like a bite to get into!
Have you see any online guides to tearing into the column? Never done
that. Do you think it could be either or, the dbl headlight switch on
the dash or the one on the column your talking about? I know when it
started failing I could turn the headlight off and on and it would work
right for a while so I figure it was that switch or I was clicking a
relay somewhere. Never really use the high-beams but I do have tilt
wheel I use daily.

Thank again for your post!

That is the problem. It could be either one. The main switch on the dash
runs power to the lights, The switch inside the column grounds the
relays that select which beam your lights are on, if the ground contact
in it fails neither set of lights will operate.
So if you were to bypass the main switch (or get one from a salvage yard
for testing use) and you still have no lights then it points to the
switch in the column. Also make sure the main ground in the front for
the lights themselves hasn't rusted off. Usually that will not cause all
the lights to shut off though.

OK, I only thought it fair to tell u guy who helped what the issue
ended up being. The issue was the headlight switch on the dash. It
seems that there is some kind of thin metal tab, maybe a thermal
link or sorts that seemed to have gotten weak. I pick up a new
switch at the dealer ($45) and all seem OK.

Thanks again for all that weighed in

THE END (I hope) LOL
