How do you check for a jumped timming chain on this engine with no Dist. |
A 5.7 has a distributor even in Vortec flavor, it just looks different
in apperance and is a bit different in function. It is kinda hard to
tell for sure without a degree wheel and a cam lobe spec. You can
check for slop in it pretty easy though. Put a breaker bar on nut for
dampner and attempt to rotate crank back and forth a bit as you will
feel when it trys to "pick up" the cam. There should be less than 5
degrees on sloop as measured at crank (this would equal 10 degrees at
cam since it turns at half speed) It there is 5 degrees or more it is
time to think about changing the chain and if it is 10 or more you are
starting to get up to where it can jump (10 degrees on crank would be
20 degrees on cam)
