Default Alternator problem - 11-15-2003 , 01:43 PM

Got a humming/whining noice from my 95 Blazer when i accelerate. Local
mechanic used a stetoscop on the alternator blaming it to be a bearing.

What should I do about this? Replace the thing? Get it repaired or just
drive on and see what happans?

Is this a normal problem? Milage is about 100k miles.

Yes, normal service life of an alternator. (100k is pretty good)
Eventually the bearing will fail (stranding you?). I would get a replacement. For your year I
believe rebuilt is the only option, Unless you can wait for the rebuilder to do the one you have.

Cheers

I'll agree, 113K was the life for the one in my 94 Jimmy. Rebuilt was
the solution, cost $130 after getting the core charge back at Advance
Auto.

ASAP.

My alternator failures have been ugly events. The alt dies, the engine sucks
the battery dry, then all systems go down hard - the steering gets weird, no
engine, no brake lites, no signals, no headlights, no nothing.....extremely
disconcerting when it happens in the middle lane of I-95 ... dangerous, even...

Thanx for all advice! Will get the thing replaced ASAP.

A couple of weeks ago i installed a extra amp for my stereo. Nothing
extreme, just a ordinary amp. I also had to replace the batteryconnector
with a standard matching bolt og connect my positive cable to the battery.
As far as I can judge the connection is fine.

Could this in any way be related to my failing alternator?
What do you guys do when you have to connect a extra cable to the battery?

You have a mechanical failure, not related.

Use the underhood fuse center for your takeoffs. That is what it is for.

Cheers

Thougt about that but was recomended to connect directly to the battery
becuase of noise problems.....

If the bearing locks up it'll smoke the belt and when it goes? you can end
up with a lot more problems and possibly be stranded. most of the time the
same belt drives your water pump. just get another AC-Delco GM alternator
and be on the safe side.

I was having a problem like this on a 91 SUB (350ci) I had the light
for the alternator come on and replaced it. After about one month it
would show the volts jumping around on the in dash meter. retest it
and the alternator showed fine. The one day it would not start.
Hauled it to the chevy place and they found a bad "fuel relay". This
has been about one month and every thing is fine. So you might have a
grounding issue some where. At least that what the chevy place told me
as to why the relay stopped the voltmeter from moving.

I recently installed 3 autozone rebuilt alternators and 1 new
alternator after a 5 year stint of no charging system issues. All of
these have been within the past 3 months and to begin with, I was
under the impression it may just be bum rebuilds. Twice in the past
couple of weeks I've gone on the road for the weekend where everything
looked fine until Monday morning and then, no charge (as per my gauge
and verified by a voltmeter). Battery started and ran the vehicle
okay (bat is one year old) but no charging system. This vehicle is a
97 GMC suburban k1500, BTW.

This past Sunday morning, I experienced the same thing and shut the
car off. This time, I decided to remove the negative cable for about
5 minutes and reconnected. Voila, the charging system worked. It's as
if some sort of charge is being held (or accumulated over a few days)
or some sort of capacitive action is taking place somehow.

I decided to try the neg cable because the last time I took it to
autozone, the alternator checked out okay on their machine (but off
the vehicle).

Anyone run into a problem like this in the past? Where a good
alternator/regulator seems to build up some sort of charge and won't
operate properly? TIA

Have you considered the possibility you may just have a bad ground?
