You can get them out with a hammer and chizzel if you work at it. Also, a
pickle-fork is good to have and can force them out. Another good tool for it
is a torche- burn-em. Once out the new ones do go in easy - and do change all
4 at once. Your alignment should be OK but if you have expensive tires you may
want to get an alighment done. Most importantly put a jack under the
lower-control arm before you break them loose. Also include tie-rod ends and a
center-link. Doing it yourself you should be able to get all those parts and
have a whole new-front-end for about $250 (and ~4 hours) depending on the
vehicle-make and parts-store.

The OEM ball joints are riveted in place, so you will have to drill out the
rivets or air chisel them. Obviously, you need to pull the spindle. The
new ball joints simply bolt it. In my opinion, you would want to spend the
extra $50 to do the tops at the same time. Since you have the spindle and
everything else off, it is go insurance.
