well it seems that if I either put in 5 or 6 quarts of oil I'm in good
shape for the next 5000 km.

The engines displacement doesn't have any relation to how much oil is required.

the smallest V8 (4.8) in a new truck puts

out about 285hp
do you mean the smallest v8 offered in a new truck or the smallest v8 engine
gm produces?

i know they make a 267c.i. (4.4L) which is a v8

funny... I thought "the smallest V8 (4.8) in a new truck" was pretty
clear.

Don't forget, GM used to make a 265 c.i.d. not sure on the liter size.

The 265 was out of production long before we started referring to displacements
in liters. However 265 is approximately 4.3L. The 4.3L V6 is 262 cubic inches.

yep.. and on about your 2nd set of rings you had a 283.. lol
I know that folks love the 350, but I still think that those early
small block v-8's (256-283-327) were some of the best, most dependable
engines made.. (and you could work on them without calling in a
plumber and electrician to get the smog crap out of your way)
