Default *ping* Transurgeon : Tranny issue.... - 08-27-2004 , 11:50 PM

Transurgeon,

I have an '88 K1500 and have been having an issue, actually a several
issues with the tranny.

1. When I am running at Freeway speed ~ 65 MPH I can feel the tranny
shifting up then down repeatedly. The speed is not varying, but the tranny
keeps alternating.

2. (This one is going to sound nuts but...) When I go around a left hand
corner (not a gradual corner but more say at an intersection.) The tranny
seems to slip for a second and then grab a gear. I have not noticed this on
a right hand turn .... only left.

3. There is a delay between 2nd and 3rd gear. It seems to shift out of
second, at which time the RPM's increase then it shifts to third about a
half to full second later.

Any Ideas?

I have had started a running battle with the local Chev. Dealer in regards
to this beacuse the tranny is still under warranty. The guy that I
purchased the pickup from had the orignal tranny replaced by "Mr.
Goodwrench" in 3/02 - he had to have the replacement replaced under
warranty in 8/02. The tranny was given a 3year 36k warranty. Here it is 24
mo. and 12k later and "Mr. Goodwrench" is telling me that he's not sure that
the warranty can be transferred after one tranny was already replaced under
warranty.

What a load of crap!

The warranty paper work clearly states that the warranty is fully
tranferable to subsequent owners. Not to mention they are counting the
warranty period from March (When the original tranny was replaced) not
August (When the replacement was replaced.) I have all of the paper work and
receipts.......

Any ideas on this one?

Thanks in advance

3/02 until now is STILL less than 3 years. Take them to math class.
They should be covering it...

As far as your tranny issues goes, it is going south on you. The pause
between aecond and third is the tranny slipping. Just went thru this with
my 90 suburban. It will need to be replaced shortly. The constant up and
downshift at 65 is very common with the 700 r4 and is easily fixed with a
kit sold at most tranny shops. I think mine was about 100 bucks completely
installed.

As far the warranty issue, I'm no expert here but from what experience I
have and from your saying I think Mr. Goodwrench should be paying for this
new tranny you are gonna need. Just my opinion. Good Luck

I experienced this issue with the Goodwrench replacement for my lousy,
piece of shit, 1990 4.3L Vortec V-6. The original engine failed at 106
thousand miles and I paid a whorehouse price to replace this defective
engine with a Goodwrench rebuilt. This Goodwrench replacement engine had
a 36-month/36-thousand mile warranty.

The Goodwrench replacement engine failed big time after 6 thousand miles
(the mechanic said that it had "spun a bearing") and the dealer put in
another Goodwrench engine. Because no money had changed hands, the
mileage part of the original Goodwrench engine warranty period remained
the same. However, because the vehicle was in the shop for 7 days, the
time element of the warranty was extended by one week. For example, if
my 36-month (3-year) Goodwrench warranty started on March 15, 1996 and
ended on March 15, 1999, the 7-days needed for the warranty motor
transplant would be added to the end of the contract, making March 22,
1999 the new termination date. (This extension of warranty time periods
due to loss of use because of warranty repairs has been California law
for many years, but it may not apply in all states). Of course, I had to
pay for my rental car while the truck was getting its second Goodwrench
transplant.

Under the Goodwrench warranty, the dealer is obligated only to replace
the failed Goodwrench component (over and over again, whenever
necessary) until the warranty for the original component that you paid
for expires. Whenever you require a warranty replacement of a Goodwrench
motor or transmission, you do not get to start over with a brand new
36-month/36-thousand mile warranty.

For example, if your original Goodwrench engine or transmission (or one
of its intermediate replacements) fails 35-months/35-thousand miles from
the date that the original Goodwrench component was installed, the new
Goodwrench replacement component will be out of warranty after
1-month/1-thousand miles -- assuming that it lasts that long. Who knows,
so near the end of the warranty period, the dealer could try to wiggle
out of the contract by claiming that you neglected maintenance or abused
the component. Dealers are also known to try to get customers to settle
for a chintzy prorate or some other sleazy warranty dodge.

Another thing that you will notice is that the original factory warranty
is in addition to the mileage on the vehicle the day that you sign the
papers. For example, my truck had 3 miles on it when I bought it -- I
put 2 of these miles on the truck during the test drive. Therefore, the
expiration of the mileage part of my 72-month/100-thousand mile extended
warranty is written as 100,003 miles. As it stands now, the 72-months
will expire on February 28, 2010. However, any overnight stays at the
dealership, which are required for warranty repairs, will be added to
this end time. Hopefully, I will never need to use the extended
warranty.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I am about to go another round with the
dealership later today. We'll see how it goes.

If nothing else, I will head to another GM dealership that is close by and
have the same discussion with them, it should be warranted at any GM
dealership.

I got to thinking that maybe the history that the previous owner had with
the dealership in question, is influencing their hesitancy to work on it.
Maybe a fresh dealership with no history with the pickup would be
beneficial.

Any input in regards to this thought would be appreciated.

Once again thanks for the input.
