Simon Mason spoke:
IIRC, if you got stopped for doing 33 mph in a 30 zone, you could plead that
your speedo was reading low, then the police would get it calibrated and if
you were found to be correct you would be let off.

I tried that - well, 114mph [1] in a 70, anyway, and they said "fess up or we
do you for speeding *and* a defective speedo!"

Speedos can over-read but *not* under-read

[1] We 'negotiated'[2] and settled on 100mph

[2] I grovelled.

Nice honesty there

It dropped to zero about 30 miles from home on a long journey yesterday -
and the miles have stopped clocking up as well. It sometimes comes back
but not for very long. AFAIAA it gets its feed from the ABS wheel sensors.
The ABS system still seems to work OK - no warning lights and it still
pumps back when I try an emergency stop. Anything else worth looking for,
before I call Monza Sport?

Just thought I'd report back. I continued to use the car for a day or tow
with no other symptoms or warning lights. Then, very suddenly, the battery
refused to turn the engine on the starter - the alternator had died.

Replacement (exchange/recon.) alternator cost £555 fitted ...

So did your speedo start working again or is that still broken?

Answers to questions thus far:

Speedo - yes it's working. Apparently this is normal in situations where the
voltage available at the ABS control unit drops - someone on another forum
had a broken battery earth strap which caused the speedo to stop working.
The battery/charging warning light gives no indication of any problem,
instead the various control units give up one by one as the voltage from the
battery drops, and the speedo feed tends to go first.

Cost - before VAT was split £168 parts £314 labour. On the 2.4 JTD it's
under the engine and I think there's a cross-member that gets in the way as
well. A new alternator is listed at over £400 by AR.

Mon dieu !

With prices like that, my investigations into alternative marques are now
heading along the lines of Trabant / the Indian contraption that costs
£1.39, seats 18, and they give you free Macburgers for life.
