Default 156 Speedo failed any ideas? - 10-19-2009 , 04:40 PM

156 2.4 JTD 2000.
It dropped to zero about 30 miles from home on a long journey yesterday -
and the miles have stopped clocking up as well. It sometimes comes back but
not for very long. AFAIAA it gets its feed from the ABS wheel sensors. The
ABS system still seems to work OK - no warning lights and it still pumps
back when I try an emergency stop. Anything else worth looking for, before I
call Monza Sport?

It'll almost certainly be a broken cable / connector IMHO. But *where*?
No idea.

Use a satnav instead - its more accurate anyway!

I don't think that will wash with plod or the MOT man. Broken cable.

Not tested in MOT, and the odds of plod spotting it = 0 IMHO.

IIRC, if you got stopped for doing 33 mph in a 30 zone, you could plead that
your speedo was reading low, then the police would get it calibrated and if
you were found to be correct you would be let off.

I tried that - well, 114mph [1] in a 70, anyway, and they said "fess up or we
do you for speeding *and* a defective speedo!"

Speedos can over-read but *not* under-read

[1] We 'negotiated'[2] and settled on 100mph

[2] I grovelled.

You wouldn't get stopped for doing 33 in a 30, unless its zero-tolerance
week! A satnav speedo is correct and you have 10% +/- 2mph. So you shouldn't
be stopped for less than 35 in a 30, 79 in a 70, 57 in a 50 etc. I believe
its the same threshold on speed cameras, but aren't prepared to test that
theory!!

And I also don't think the speedo is a MOT test point.

Oh and the police aren't going to get your speedo calibrated for you - they
might give you a few days to get it done yourself at an official, recognised
MOT centre so that you could defend a marginal offence, but they certainly
won't do it for you!
