Also, try turning the aircon *right* off.
That *should* turn off on full throttle anyway. I agree that the
description suggests a high pressure air leak.
Should it? Blimey? Is that just full, or FULL hard in the mat?

Yep. It was part of a cunning plan to deliver *full* engine power for
overtaking. I could never tell myself but it the compressor is
disengaged on, as you say, FULL hard on the mat! Alfas are loaded with
cunning plans..

Probably neither. Sounds like a possible air leak. Had a listen under
the bonnet?

Yes, but under no load the noise only comes in at high revs, so is
competing with the engine noise.

Perhaps it's coming from the cabin?
Loose nut holding the steering wheel?

It'll be the hose between the turbo and the airbox, if it's anything like my
Mondeo 2.2TDCi that had very similar symptoms.

You've met him then?

Tiz - and on order from Stoneacre for the princely sum of £17-10/-
'Should be here on Wednesday'

The suggested temp fix of duct tape fails, as the split is at the turbo end, near
to the zorst, gets all hot and guey.

Large motorcycle puncture repair patch will be tried when it cools down.

One more question.

HTF do you get the hose clips off?

They look to be a sort of bastard off-spring of a tie-wrap
and a jubly clip, with a large metal lump with a hole
through it, but not where the joint is.

If they are what I think they are you effectively twist. And you'll
probably need the special pliers to get the buggers back on

The 156 1.9 JTD had started making a very odd noise.

Started yesterday, under heavy throttle, a sort of
shhhshhsshshs noise, best I can describe it is like the
noise of waves receding on a pebble beach.

Only happens under heavy throttle, neutral or slight
acceleration there is no problem.

So, how terminal and expensive is this likely to be?
Coming late to the discussion... this happened twice with my 147 - both
warranty replacements of the turbo hose due to crap design where it rubbed
against main earth strap on engine and wore a hole after a few '000 miles!
(they changed the pipe design when 2nd one was fitted)

Yep it does turn heads, and if you're driving with the sun behind (or lights
at night) the engine doesn't half belch out a lot more smoke than normal!
Mine went the 2nd time on holiday so ended up driving as if the throttle
pedal was made of egg shell!

On the 156 it is rather exposed at the bottom-front of the engine bay

I suspect the other day a car in front flipped up a pop-can in the road and it
went under the car, could have done the damage.

S'eggzactly what mine does - the smoke actually comes from the split in the
inlet hose though!
