Coming late to the discussion... this happened twice with my 147 - both
warranty replacements of the turbo hose due to crap design where it
rubbed
against main earth strap on engine and wore a hole after a few '000
miles!
(they changed the pipe design when 2nd one was fitted)

On the 156 it is rather exposed at the bottom-front of the engine bay

I suspect the other day a car in front flipped up a pop-can in the road
and it
went under the car, could have done the damage.

Yep it does turn heads, and if you're driving with the sun behind (or
lights
at night) the engine doesn't half belch out a lot more smoke than normal!
Mine went the 2nd time on holiday so ended up driving as if the throttle
pedal was made of egg shell!

S'eggzactly what mine does - the smoke actually comes from the split in
the
inlet hose though!
lol - bet that's a sight....

As an aside, I drove 400 miles back from holiday with it hissing and 20
second 0-60s!! Didn't do the car any harm though!

Damn! The simple approach!

Tiz - and on order from Stoneacre for the princely sum of £17-10/-
'Should be here on Wednesday'

Sweet.
Hold the presses!

Phones Stoneacre today to confirm the part had arrived before setting
off to Doncaster. Yes, it had, but he then described it to me and it
was not the part needed. After much faffing around he said the part
was now £75 and would have to be ordered!

So I called Chris Variera in Nottingham, who sent me screen-shots of
their parts screen to confirm the part, which was wrong, so I
photographed the offending item and email it to them, and Lo! yes,
they have one in stock, only £70.16p!

Anyway, now fitted and all fixed.

The hose is actually to the intercooler!

Meh. Serves your right for having a new fangled turbomagizmo

...and since when was owning an Alfa not a variant of financial
suicide?

I saw a big mileage 156 2.4JTD (on eBay I think) the other day and
he'd detailed all the work done to the car over time. It made for
*very* sobering reading!
