Absolutely. I remember shoving huge amounts of cataloy and fibre glass
on a galvanised Volvo tank in the seventies when the car was 6. I knew
its sills and rear wheel arches intimately!

Even so, looking about, most cars do seem to last better than my Alfa
did. My local independent commented on its rust which was a bit
disheartening as they seem to only work on the oldest junk still on
the road. Also, a mobile touch-up firm refused to fix a paint chip due
to unrelated rust nearby! :-(

They do that, don't they though? Bit of sod, though.
If it had been a rep box I wouldn't have felt bad about it but (as
I've said all too often) I think mine was the best looking variant and
colour of the best looking saloon ever built. I would have been well
pleased if it had just had a few more years of stamina. Then I
wouldn't be suffering the embarrassingly sh!te door handles and seats
I've got now.

This debate has got me thinking in strange ways. Here's an example.. I
wonder if, having owned a diesel Alfa, I'm qualified as a 'petrol
head'? Top Gear didn't cover that though, IIRC, JC liked the 2.4JTD
quite a lot.

I think I'll give you honorary membership
Cool..ta! I'll wear your badge with pride! :-)

Believe me, that rust on a 156 pales into insignificance compared with
the rust you get on early to mid 90s BMWs and Mercedes....

OTOH mine appears to have no rust at all. Ditto SWMBO's GTV

...I would if you'd included Mercedes up to somewhere quite a bit
beyond 2000. I regularly walk past a guy with his own limo business
and the wheel arches and adjacent areas on rather recent E and S Class
stuff beggar belief. As Top Gear joked.."built like a Mercedes"!!

I don't doubt it. Maybe mine was thrown together on a Friday? Maybe
it's the weather here? Doesn't really matter now..

Anyway, a prize should go to Rab C for starting the biggest thread in
AAA-R for..er..how long?! 8-O

Our first 116 was a Friday car, I'm sure.

When I put the cheapos on the 156 I was wary - first opportunity I
deliberately did a wheel spin, and very hard braking.

Throwing cheap tyres into the mix should serve to complicate the

Cornering I was
'cautious' about and the car definitely felt different, but this was with
new tread replacing almost illegal tread.

Within a day or so things calmed down and it now feels sharper handling
than it did with the old rubber on.

I'm not overly surprised. Personally I tend to stick with P6000s cos I
can get them, and I know they do good. Bit like Avons on the Sprint IYSWIM.
Well I've always had P6000s on my Alfas, but the Vredestien on the Mitsi were
a revelation, and so far these <insert unknown make here> on the 156 are more
than satisfactory.

Our last pair of Jap motors, a Galant and a Scooby, both suffered
excessive rot on the rear wheel arches - the Galant around 6 years old,
the scooby is a '96, so not so bad.

Sorry, all out of popcorn, but I do have a family sized bag of Doritos
and a slab of beer....
