300 quid at a specialists, from what I've read in AutoItalia.

The 1.8 is much easier to do than the 2.0

I thought that was fair for the amount of work involved. Certainly cheaper
than a main dealer that's for sure!
Or a new engine.

But almost as much as buying another car with 12 months MOT.....

I do wonder how much of that work was actually needed, 'cos it's more
work than our 156 has needed with more miles on it.

To be fair *I* asked for most of it to be done. I asked for the cambelt as
it was last done at 42k miles. I asked for plugs, air filter and wiper
blades. It made sense to get variators and water pump done at the same time.
It failed on emissions as it always does due to lambda sensor, but this time
the cat blew up and needed replacing after 8 years - not that bad.

I've owned it from new and so know its history. It's much cheaper than a new
car or getting another one with an unknown past history. Barring accidents,
I should have a few more years of worry free driving, so I see it as an
investment.

Bills this size are not uncommon for Alfa owners. The service cost is
about half what I expect to pay from a main dealer.

Mine's June..better start saving then.. :-(

I don't understand. I mean *really* don't understand.

I'm convinced that so-called 'specialists' are operating a rip-off
system due to the incompetence and charges from main dealers.

I chuck ours at local independents and have never seen bills even
approaching the levels talked of on here.

Ditto - my last service (96K) cost me £111.88 parts and labour and I was
recently charged just £135.57 labour to fit new bushes all round.....
