Default E150 Differential Identification - 05-21-2009 , 12:49 AM

Hi,

I have a 2002 E150 van. My repair manual, a Haynes production, notes
that this van may have two models of differential.

Ford 9.75 inch and Model 60 axles
Ford 8.8 inch and Model 70 axles

What is the inch dimension referring to?
How would I determine which differential model I have?

The identifier tag on the differential has the following numbers
3 S 711E
L 55975 2B15

Thanks,
William

Going out on a limb here... you are missing some info...

I imagine the bottom line of your diff tag reads "3 L 55 975 yadda yadda".

This would be a "L" imited slip diff....... 3***55 ratio. The ring gear will
have a diameter of 975... that would be 9.75 inches.

The stuff you didn't ask for.... I've been doing this crap for nearly 40
years... These days, I like to do it with my trusty service manuals and
torque wrench in hand... There is a reason for that and I will gladly
expound on it for those who care....

However, many DIYers will call down professional technicians. I can expound
on that, too... (this is aimed at a very few individuals).

Let's go deeper... According to the appropriate service manual (this would
be the Ford factory WSM), your Haynes manual falls flat on
it'sface...getting a really decent 99.9% in the misinformation department
(based on your statements).

E150 will have either an 8.8 inch diameter ring gear or a 9.75 inch diameter
ring gear... Neither will have a '60' or a '70' attached to them.

E250 will most likely be a Dana model 60 with semi floating axles....

E350 will most likely be a Dana model 60 with full floating axles and single
rear wheels....

E350.... I wish I could claim real familiarity here.... will most likely be
Dana model 70 with dual rear wheels and full floating axles...

Yes... I AM a dink... and, yes.... you ARE welcome....
