Default Help to Identify Automobile - 07-01-2008 , 09:39 AM

I'm trying to identify the automobile in the attached picture (
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn60/chengdave2003/Miscellaneous/DeHartMartinresized.jpg
). I was able to blow up the tag to read most of it. It says Ft. Sill
is in vertical letters on the left; OKLA (as in Oklahoma) in vertical
letters on the right; at the bottom ("EAS"?), and then U S Army, and the
date is 1927. The fella in the picture is Martin H. DeHart, a first
cousin (twice removed) of mine. I'm assuming the firgure of the jumping
cougar (etc) on the tire cover may help to identify it. Thank you very
much!!!

Dave

It looks like a Whippet roadster, manufactured by Willys Overland,
circa 1927-28. Notice the whippet (dog) on the spare cover.

Here is a touring car, of the same make and vintage:

Thank you very much! I did some more research and I think you're right.
I haven't found a car that matches it exactly, but pretty darned close.

Thank you again!

I acually found a picture of a 1927 Whippet truck that had the exact
same hood ornament/radiator cap. So I'm leaning toward a 1927 verses a
1928. Much harder trying to find pictures of a 1927 though. But I know
you are right, everything points toward it being a Whippet. Funny that
I'd never even heard of one until you had mentioned the make.

Thank you SOOO much for taking the time to pass this to me. I was not
getting anywhere fast trying to identify it....

Sincerely,

Dave Young

A little more on the Whippet. In 1949 while I was in high school, one of the
English teacher was still driving her 1928 Whippet coupe to school every day.
In 1951 when I graduated, she was still teaching and driving her Whippet.
(Cedar Rapids Ia.)

The Willys-Overland Company, made Willys-Knight and Whippets. John North Willys
purchased the faltering Overland company in 1907 and renamed it in 1 908. The
company was flourishing by 1910 and for a time was the 2nd largest automobile
company in the world outselling all but Ford. After 1918, decision to
concentrate on low- and medium priced cars. That diminished sales and sapped
their resources during the prosperous 20's . Overland was dropped from the
company name in 1930 though cars with that name would appear again in 1932.

Whippets last year was 1930 and have 103.3 or 112.5 wheelbases and either a
40-bhp 4 cylinder or a 50-bhp six cylinder engine.

This company continued into 1952 until Kaiser purchased it. They got the Willys
Jeep and kept it for years until sold to American Mortors, the later Chrysler
acquired the Jeep. So under many names the Overland and Willys name has
survived for many, many year.
