Default How do I remove scratches from the windscreen? - 06-20-2004 , 02:54 PM

Hi,

On the left hand side (right hand drive car) of my windscreen is a scratch
that's been done by the end of the wipe blade, it's about 2-3" long and
about 1" wide, looks a bit like some sandpaper has been caught under the
wiper blade.

Is there a product on the market that will let me polish scratches out of
glass?

Thanks in advance

Daz

this q was asked afew months back with no real answer other than make sure

D'oh!

I noticed T-Cut make a scratch remover and it does say it works on glass,
perhaps worth a try...

I only collected the car on Friday (Ex Demonstrator) so perhaps it's going
back...

Cheers

It works very well on clear plastic (an old modeller's trick from when I was
a kid, IIRC)

Would have thought that glass would be too hard, though - I'd look at a
specialist glass polish, myself (Autogylm as a first try, or something that
a glazier would recommend).

Assumption: a *very* light scratch

Well... toothpaste IS a mild compound so with enough elbow grease (think big
polishing machine) you might do it.

But for glass, you'd want a range of compounds to that you can get it quick
then smooth over to a "glass" finish.

Not really something you can do without a machine.

www.screwfix.com & do a search for "glass polishing kit". About £20 & works
pretty well - I think the cutting agent is called Cerium Oxide IIRC.

You use an electric drill & you have to be careful to keep it moving & keep
the thing wet enough so that you don't get a localised heat build up which
can weaken the glass.

I used it on the inside of a big aquarium with good results & that's made of
plate glass which is very hard. It took quite a while though - over an hour
to do an area about 9" by 9". I've seen the same kit advertised for
polishing windscreens. All that said, as a general rule, if the scratch(es)
are deep enough such that you can feel them with a fingernail then they are
reckoned to be too deep to polish out.

I.
