Whew! And to think I was toying with the idea of replacing my old 100 with a 97 A8! It only costs $900 to rebuild the 100's slushbox.... |

So, I just heard today from customer service at Audi -- they won't make even a token effort to compensate for the transmission failure on my 1997 A8 with 65,000 miles. I didn't expect them to do the $10,000 fix for free -- but they didn't even apologize (which would have cost them nothing) that I've had this experience with this car -- a car the local dealer has maintained at a schedule that exceeded the Audi recommendations. I'm a careful driver, the car has not been abused, and until this time I have been a major supporter and recommender of Audi. Do you have any suggestions? I plan on sharing this info with everyone I know -- so, please, pass the word. |

Bullshit. Try to find a good used differential on a really old car. On Tue, 24 Jun 2003 11:41:07 -0500, "Stephen Clark" noone (AT) nowhere (DOT) not> wrote: Whew! And to think I was toying with the idea of replacing my old 100 with a 97 A8! It only costs $900 to rebuild the 100's slushbox.... |

I'm not sure of your meaning, JP. Do you mean it's hard to find, or I should try to find one rather than rebuild? I don't need it yet, but some day I will. Reverse is reluctant to engage when the tranny is hot. All forward gears are OK. STC |

Old type 44 transmissions are cheap and easy. The differentials they bolt to are always neglected, always shot, and unavailable as "good used." If you have a good diff now, treat it with care. Almost every old 3-speed Audi box I've done over the years required diff work.
