Eldred,
We were near each other on the track quite a bit yesterday. I thought I
had done pretty well, especially considering my car had been used as a wall
buffer by several cars as the pack past me on two separate occasions. I do
always take the highline when being overtaken, though as I have said before,
i do make mistakes, I am new to this. You experienced drivers might want to
consider the cars on the outside when passing, I managed to stay on the lead
lap and quite racey till very near the end of the race. When the pack did
catch me and pass, my day was basically ended by lead pack cars bouncing me
off the wall as they passed, it is really a very wide track and there is no
reason to be that close to the outside wall passing traffic in the dogleg.
Save the passes for clean areas on the track. I have been bitched out for
not paying attention to cars approaching and to use the F2+space combo, I
think that same applies to cars that are overtaking, please, please take
care to leave enough room on your outside to get past. I think most of the
drivers here could do well to remember that lifting is not a bad thing, and
that getting in line to pass traffic is much safer than continueing to fight
for a position at the risk of the rest of the field.
As for what I did after the damage. I reviewed my replay and found on
the restart on lap 72, that eldred and bfarmer (sorry, not sure of your
given name) were behind me, by several car lengths. I passed coorzman low
on the back stretch, moved high for my entry into the corner and then down
to the bottom around three into four. At this point (entry) Eldred you were
in my rearview mirror running into the highline but I had plenty of room to
move up as I exited four. I was running almost 180 and you were not gaining
on me much at all at that point, still, as I went toward the wall on my
exit, you did scrap the wall and when you came off the wall continued on
down into the side of the 15 bfarmer car. I was simply running my line
ahead of you and you were clearly in my rearview mirror the whole time. I
had no expectations at that point that you were passing me. I did not see
the incident you refer to but I remember being around your group on the
previous restart and slowing then accelerating past all three of you as you
all seemed to have a very slow restart. I felt up to the point my aero was
ruined that I was every bit as fast as you guys and was racing all of you
for position. I will stand by the "rule" (?) that I am under no obligation
to move over and allow a pass for position.
Sorry to be so wordy here but I think I will need specific evidence that
I did something wrong here. I am very happy with the way I raced and my day
was ended by the actions of others and not through my own mistakes as has
been the case in the past. I am very capable of racing the high and low
lines at Daytona, I am able to change lines to avoid traffic and wrecks even
in the middle of corners without spinning or "losing it". I had no aids
turned on (autoclutch=on) and do not need aids at this track.
Having said all that, I did make a big mistake and need to apologize to
the 162 car(?). On one restart I had a pretty good head of steam up and the
cars ahead of me were a good bit slower, I dove low (wrong way) slowing fast
on the brakes but was going below the yellow line, I tried to stay above it
but the 162 was coming down as well to avoid a car outside and we touched,
my right front to his left rear, spinning him and he went off my front end
into the infield. Sorry bout that. On another restart Eldred was ahead of
me and slowed suddenly, I don't recall why but I shot down again ( gotta
learn to move up the track) and was black flagged for passing on the inside
on a restart. I feel that was a move to avoid an accident and I should not
have been black flagged, but I did pass to the inside. got lucky and served
it right before another yellow so did not lose a lap on the stop and go,
barely. :-)
