Default Water pump on E30 - 07-03-2003 , 04:04 PM

Hi Gang,

I have 88 325 E30....recently I started getting this metallic rustling sound
in my car....I'm pretty I have it isolated and it is the water pump. I
think the bearings are gettign ready to go on water pump. I have only
116,000 miles on the car.

A couple of questions:

1) Is it normal for the water pump to go around this mileage?
2) Appromixately cost it should take to get it replaced...just trying avoid
getting ripped off.

Many thanx.
-Alex

Difficult to give you an estimate of price, not knowing where you are.

Labour cost should be about 4 hours to do the water pump and timing belt. If
your belt is any more than a few weeks old, it should be replaced with the
pump.

Water pumps on this engine have plastic parts and are notorious for not
lasting very long. I replaced one from an online store for US$35 last year.

No they don't.

No E30 had plastic in the water pump.

The one I changed was in a 325i but the engine may have oringinally been in
a 525i - I assumed the 325i and 525i were the same engine. Anyway it
definitely had plastic guts in the pump that squeaked alot.

You're obviously talking about an E36 325i.

No M20 engine ever had a plastic water pump impellor. All E36 did, up until
May 1996.
