From what I can remember we had three seats for our boy, a basket for the
baby stage, then two different seats, both facing forward, positioned on
the back seat, never on the front seat.

The last can be one with removable back.

What do you mean by the ref to centre? I would not put a child seat in the
centre unless there is a 3-point seatbelt there.

Removing the seat back converts the seat into a simple booster seat for the
older/bigger child.

I agree that, although it is legal (in the UK at least) to put a child on
the front seat (air bag disabled) I wouldn't.

Yes, but then your grandkids will do to your kids what your kids did to

grandparents did!

Finding a manual shift is tough. Looking on eBay, I found only one
current-model 5 series wagon nationwide that was equipped with a six
speed manual tranny. For me, not having three pedals is a deal
breaker..

Anyway, the search is on hold for a bit as it turns out my wife,
usually the SUV driver, doesn't want me to sell the 330ci!! I guess
she likes the top-down driving as much as I do, so we'll make it work
as long as we can.

Looking for folks to share their 3 and 5 series wagon experiences. I'm
currently driving a 330ci convertible, but with one child and another
on the way, it's just not cutting it any more. Time to grow up, I
guess..

Although most likely I'll be hauling kids around, I'm also interested
in how well full-size adults fare in the rear seats. Thanks!

My brother has a 330T - kids all grown up so just the two of them plus dog.
He tows a caravan a lot. And finds it far too small. Reckons his previous
E28 520 could hold more when going off with the caravan. He wanted a 5
series tourer, but simply couldn't find a manual one secondhand in his
neck of the woods.
I'm 6 ft tall and slim(ish) build, and fine the back a bit tight for
space. My E39 is fine in the back - for two.

My brother also wasn't willing to travel far to look at one - and wouldn't
buy off Ebay etc unseen. He did find a 540 manual - but those are simply
too thirsty for him. He wanted a 530 - or possibly a 528.
