Default E28 525E Gearing modification. - 06-28-2003 , 06:38 PM

Hi all.
I'd like to fit a diff from an old e28 520i to my e28 525e, to reduce
the gearing and boost acceleration from this torquey motor.
Currently i'm running a e28 525i diff.

With the original diff, 3000rpm did 100mph.
With my current 525i diff, it does 80mph at 3000rpm.

Does anyone know what a 520i diff would do (mph at 3000rpm).
Theres a standard 4hp22 4 speed+lockup gearbox on my e28.
Would 70mph at 3000rpm be about right???
(Obviously bouncing the rev limiter at 116mph).

I am going to fit a 323i head soon, with different engine management
to allow the engine to rev above the eta's 5000rpm limit, bearing in
mind speeding is a big licence looser in the uk .... but acceleration
isn't!!!

Final drive ratios:

520i 4.1 or 3.91:1, both were used
525e can be 2.93 or 3.07:1
525i can be 3.64 or 3.46

You can use the calculator on my web page to work out the current
gearing. As it's a UK car it's an auto. Third gear is 1:1 ratio, top is
overdrive 0.81:1.

Be careful. The Motronic engine management talks to the automatic
gearbox computer on an eta. I'm not sure what the consequences of
removing that will be on gearchanges and kickdown.
