Tested the fuel pumps, 30+ lbs and it holds the pressure well over 5

Did you check the transfer pump separately? It should put out 0.3 bar / 4.3
psi.

I had similar symptoms on my E24 and was skunked for a long time. I thought
I could hear the transfer pump running when it was really the sound of the
main pump telegraphed through the hose and body. Whe I disconnected the main
pump, I heard the silence.

If it is the transfer pump, it can be replaced with one from a '76 Chevy
Vega, see http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_...sfer_pump.html .

Bob,

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have not individually tested the fuel pumps. I just put a gauge on the
output line and cranked the motor. I got 30+ lbs pressure and it held
for a good long time. Then I pumped into a bottle and saw that it was
flowing, but I don't know what the volume is.

Fascinating articles on the Chevy fuel pump. I had a Vega once. I
replaced the muffler on the 528e with a stock Toyota truck muffler for
about $11.

I will go out after work today and look into the transfer pump and let
you know.

Thanks

Jared
