e30 alarm problem

Hi, does anybody have any information relating to the factory fitted alarm
(1989 e30 convertible). It is the alarm type which uses the magnetic disc
key. Does anybody know the correct name for this system?
The previous owner disconnected it due to false alarms. I would like to get
it going again, but my manual does not contain any circuit.
