Default Window tinting/glass on BMWs - 07-06-2003 , 12:10 AM

I was wondering if the BMW glass blocks UV or infrared? I'd like to
tint my windows with a 10% tint all around (which would be legal in
california) to block UV and infrared if the windows don't block them
already. I'm a fair skinned girl and sunburn easily so wanted to get
something to prevent it. Please post here. Thanks.

UV is prob not blocked to a great degree, but IR is definitely not blocked.
I had film applied to my SUV - a high metal content film sold by a Flint,
MI Ziebart -Tidy Car dealer. Over the past 5 years, I was transferred from
Michigan to Kansas and then to Texas. The film held up very well, in the
Texas heat. After 5 years, it looked as great as the day I picked up the
vehicle from the installer.
I selected the installer by visiting several shops in my area and selected
the one that had a neat and clean work area. Some places looked like rats
nests with wide open work areas with dust and debris on the floors that made
the place look like it had dirt floors. I also looked at finished cars in
the parking lot awaiting pickup by their owners. The store manager was also
the owner had a very neat and clean work area and seemed knowledgeable and
professional. Unfortunately, he is too far away for me to utilize his
services again.
The films with metalized coatings on the layers are more effective for heat
reflectance than the less expensive non-metal content films. The cheaper
stuff frequently turns color after a while, to a violet/lavender shade.
After having the solar film installed in my 528i by Alta Mere, the temps
were a lot lower after the car sat in the sun all day long. Although I
chose the lightest solar film they had, the vehicle looks like it has
blackout windows. Guess I'll get use to it. Oh, Alta Mere took 45 minutes
to install my film and left a cut on the passenger side film and a 2mm x
10mm bubble in the rear window. The Ziebart franchise guy took several
hours and I couldn't find a bubble.

I don't believe BMW factory glass offers any significant UV protection. Some
aftermarket tints do better than others, and not necessarily the darker
ones.

One of the best auto UV screens is a clear film:

Llumar Window Film, manufactured by CPFilms Inc., in Martinsville, VA.

Legal in all states and can be applied by any tint shop, though you'll
probably have to special order as it's not a popular item with the blackout
bling-bling set.

Sir, you are mistaken.

Skin damage from UV can occur through window glass. It's not a problem for
most of us, but people with fair or sensitive skin may need to take
precautions.

Dunno. I can barely see through these cataracts ;>)

Keep those Raybans on and you won't have to worry, at least in the daytime.

Nobody

Don't worry about gettin sunburnt behind your glass windows, the UVb
wavelengths are so reduced as not to induce any change in the pigment in
your skin. the glass wont however prevent the detrimental effects of the sun
via the higher wavelengths UVa. Choose a high solar UVa blocker to prevent
damage to your dermis.

The moral of the story...our skin is the colour as designed for where we
live in the world.
