General question although the car is OT. My son has a new M Series BMW
and is in Germany. The dealer charged
him 240 Euro for the oil during the oil change. I need to know if
there is any other source for the oil at a cheaper price. In Fl. a
dealer charged us $130 for 12 Qt case which he took back to Germany
after Thanksgiving holidays.
Castrol website doesn't even mention it except on their UK pages.
There they refer to it as CASTROL EDGE 10W-60 Oil.
I read also BMW may be using Mobil Synthetic as a replacement in the
future but no word from BMW yet.
Anyone useing this or similar oil? Any ideas where to get it?

We are an Amsoil dealer and here is what they said for the BMW M series.
1. USE ONLY BMW APPROVED OILS TO AVOID ENGINE DAMAGE.
BMW high performance synthetic oil Castrol RS 10W-60 also
called Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic oil part
no. 07 51 0 009 420 are the only BMW approved products.
2. USE ONLY BMW APPROVED OILS TO AVOID ENGINE DAMAGE.

I couldn't believe they had that in there...
I think I'd stick with Castrol, not sure where you could get it any cheaper.
That seems to be pretty much the going price between 10.99-11.99 per qt.

Makes me appreciate my Chevy even more...

I use Castrol TWS 10W60 for the ZF 6-speed transmission in my Corvette.
It's available in the U.S. only from BMW dealerships for $12/qt. They
told me it is required for the Z4 but I didn't ask about the M models.
I only need 2 every 16k miles so I'm thankful not to have to use that
as engine oil.

Zfdoc.com performed wear tests on the ZF using different types of oil
and there is something special about the Castrol oil - it outperformed
Mobil 1. If I owned an M5, it would get whatever BMW says it should
have and nothing less.

Euro 240 is expensive even at a BMW dealer.

The Edge 10W-60 is especially and only for the M and the Z8. So, if your son
drives such a car he has to use this oil to have warranty.
