Hello,
I am trying to buy a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee but the owner said the car has
a problem, the problem is noise in the engine and it will cost about
$1000.00 to fix it. Does noise in the motor of a cherokee means its dead?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

'Noise' is a nasty word when it comes to engines and $1000.00 is a wild
assed guess.

If it was only that easy, he would have fixed it because a Jeep with a
dead engine is scrap metal. Realistically knock $4000.00 at the least
off the asking price to cover for a replacement engine.

I recently priced a 'used' engine installed for a Jeep and it was
$3000.00 plus 15% tax.

Used engines are a total crap shoot, one from a wreck should not be used
because most suffer terminal bearing failure due to the impact or bent
internal parts when it rolled over and hydrolocked the piston(s). Ya
ya, they give you 30 days warranty, but a cracked thrust bearing or bent
connecting rod, which are common on the 4.0's after a wreck, can last
longer than that before grenading.

Now if you want to get a 'new' crate engine, well you better rob fort
knox or win the lotto first.

It is a moot discussion. The $tealership selling the Jeep still has it
for sale as the OP walked away. Besides the fact if it was 'really'
that 'simple' of a fix, the $tealer would have done it already. They
likely want the thousand just to open it up to see what is blown. (I
have seen that price quoted before)
