2 cycle carburetor question -

This is a little off topic of autos, but I just tore my chainsaw
carburetor apart because the saw wont run (not getting gas).
I have never understood how these 2 cycle carbs work. Ok, the
throttle, choke, and idle screws are the same as a car carb. But what
is the diaphram for? How does it work? I have always figured it's a
"fuel pump" of sorts, but there are no moving part connected to it, so
what makes it move, and thus pump the gas into the engine? I just
looked on the "how stuff works" website and they dont even mention the
diaphram. In fact they show pictures of 4 cycle carburetors in the 2
cycle article. So much for their useless site.
One other thing, is there some "standard" starting amount of turns on
the adjustment screws? There are 2 screws, one is supposed to be high
speed, the other idle. I am not sure which is which, but I assume
it's obvious once I get the thing back together. The diaphram has a
hole as well as the whole thing is full of sticky crud. I got it
soaking in carb cleaner and hope to get the parts today.
