'95 geo prism transmission repair? -

Greetings,
I have a '95 geo prizm that is having transmission difficulty. For a while
it had a bit of a clunk when the transmission started to pull (let off the
gas a bit while driving, the give it gas again and the tranny would clunk
when it engaged). In forward gears it has now developed a pretty serious
grinding sound. Reverse is fine. I replaced the left CV axle about a year
before this started, and the sound seems to be more on the left than the
right, but the axle seems fine.
I've been quoted a figure of 'at least $1800' for repair work from a local
shop with a very good reputation for doing things right the first time.
I'm thinking of doing the work myself, but I havent gotten into transmission
work before. I have a relative that has done them professionally before, so
if I get in a tight spot I have help. I'm curious how involved this work is
in a '95 prism. What specialized tools will I need, how long should I
expect it to take, etc.
Thanks
DK
