Does anyone here have a clue what could cause this? I went out of the country a couple of months ago, businesstrip, and simply put the car in the garage hust as I usually do.When arriving home I needed the car but it won't start, well,no power in the battery.I've recently discovered that the carbon in the generator gets stuck and needs to be replaced someone also said it could be the chargingrelay,I'm very sorry about my bad english but hope someone here understands what I mean. Is it true if the carbon in the generator is bad they cause powerloss in the battery??? got this hint from a friend well, neither of us i mechanics so.. Thanx in advance Regards |

On old beasts that sit for a while, the carbon or 'brush' can get stuck. If it does a thump with a rubber mallet or a chunk of 2x4 lumber used as a hammer usually fixes it. That also is a warning the alternator or generator if you have is usually in need of replacing or cleaning soon.... I own Jeeps and the 'carbon' in our alternators and starters gets stuck all the time from mud if we are off roading. It is common to have to take them apart and clean them. WD40 works well as a cleaner. Other than that the battery terminal connections can just be dirty so the alternator doesn't fully charge up the battery and it goes dead too soon. A clean there can be in order. Mike 86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail in '00 88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT's Canadian Off Road Trips Photos: Non members can still view! Thanx in advance Regards "...the carbon in the generator gets stuck and needs to be replaced..." Is the purest form of hogwash: It is so far off the mark it isn't even wrong. All modern autos place a small but significant drain on the battery even when everything is turned off. If the battery is in good condition and fully charged, a couple of months will not drain it to zero. So: Either (1) Your battery is not in good condition and was not fully charged when you parked the car. Or (2) Something in the car is placing an abnormallyl large drain on the battery. (1) Can be fixed by replacing the battery, if it is defective. Or my repairing the charging system (alternator, regulator...if separate from the alternator, cables, etc.) (2) Can be fixed only by measuring the drain and tracking down the source of the abnormal drain. A stuck-on lamp in the boot (trunk), glove-box, or under the hood, can easily drain an otherwise healthy battery in a few weeks. A mobi charger is not likely to do so.. Etc... |
