Default Heater fan problem..high speed only? - 09-19-2006 , 01:43 AM

Can anyone help...my heater works fine if I turn the dial to level 4
but it seems that 1-3 levels do nothing. I would have expected them
all to break if it was the fan, so is it likely the switch? or is it
possible that the motor can break on just some speeds? any idea how
much this might cost?

any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike

This is a generization, and a guess.

Car systems are 12v's to adust speeds of such items like a fan, the
manufactures step down voltage through resistors. These resistors
heat up, so they do fail. 1-3 might be steped down via
resistors(which might have failed in your case) and 4 (high) might be
the full 12volts.

If you are handy you might want to try and fix it yourself, but you
need to follow all safety precautions, and understand you might have
to disassemble parts of your dash.

imho,

Fan control resistor. Probably located under the hood, above the
firewall, under the fresh air intake vents.

Just a guess...

....unless it is a Ford, in which case the resistor module is probably
inside the vehicle...on a panel that protrudes into the airbox. Look
for a several-wire connector plugged into a removable panel.
