Default Flying Cars - 09-19-2006 , 02:55 PM

Ok, it’s 2006. Where are my flying cars? Yes I know they have them
already, but you need a pilot’s license (which is silly because they are
VTOL and you don’t need to use an airport runway, but I guess you need a
license to use a helipad too). I don’t want big bulky VTOL specially
licensed cars, I want something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFfbk25gjs8 speaking of which, what is
this from?

Consider the condition of many cars on the road. Do you really want someone
who is happy holding his bumpers on with duck tape to own a flying car?

Well, consider that there would be 3 dimensions to work with, so the
chances of accidents would be greatly reduced. I'll take those chances.
There's another of those flying car videos, this one is funnier, too:

The video doesn't work for me, it looks like it was removed.

Moller International are working on a flying car that looks pretty
cool: http://www.moller.com/

There are some problems remaining to be overcome, the main one being
air traffic control. NASA is working to develop a nationwide
computerized system using GPS that they hope will revolutionize air
traffic. When that's in place the skycar may become practical.
HOWEVER, even then they will be expensive, noisy, and really only
suited to taking long cross-country trips, not puttering around town.

For everyday driving you probably want an electric car like this:

Or maybe like this:

They aren't in mass production yet, but these kinds of vehicles are
coming Real Soon Now.
