I'm in process of overhauling my 1982 VW Rabbit Diesel because I didn't turn
the engine through two complete revolutions after changing the timing belt.
Instead, I turned the key to start and BANG! Possible bent valve or piston
damage. With over 140K miles and more that the usual 5% difference in
compression between cylinders I am not just fixing a bent valve but will
restore. I can reassemble but I'd like to learn how to time it properly. I
was warned many years ago by a mechanic that it is important that the timing
be accurate or possibility of burning a hole through a piston. Once before
I didn't get the belt right and barely had enough power to get to dealer
with a tow.
The block will be removed also for new rubber engine mounts. Normally I
have only been able to replace the front engine mount. The other mounts are
restrained by mounting brackets for other accessories.
