Default question re buying tires in sets - 09-16-2003 , 03:59 AM

I have a 96 Subaru with 4 Bridgestone tires. The other day I noticed a
bubble on the side of one of the tires, so I took the car into the tire
dealer that I bought the original tires from. He said that 3 of the tires
(including the damaged one) are close to the 60k mile limit and getting
pretty bald. The 4th tire was purchased last year because of damage to the
original and therefore in fairly new condition. The dealer recommended
buying 3 replacement tires and keeping the one newer tire. My Subaru has
all-wheel drive. Should I follow his recommendation or buy a complete set
of 4 tires instead using the newer tire as a spare? Thanks for any advice.

what does the current spare look like?

if it's good put it on the same axle as the newish tyre, buy 3 tyres
and use one of the new tyres for a spare.
if it's buggered then just buy 4 tyres.

....

I'd probably just get the four tires. The question is, what condition is
your current spare in?

BTW, If you have a "baby" spare, then using the extra tire won't work,
because it won't fit in the trunk properly.

i'm not familiar with this type of vehicle but i dont think it has the donut
style spare becuase its a AWD.. i mean most-to-all AWD vehicles have a full
size spare... all my 4x4s/AWDs had/have a full size spare.

BTW: just buy 4 new ones... so down the road a-way's you wont have to buy
just one for that side.... and then later replace 3... then 1.... then
3..... then 1......... probly easier to just throw all new ones on there.
