Default SUV With No Warranty or Inspection? - 08-31-2003 , 10:23 PM

This is regarding a '97 Mercury Mountaineer 4x4, private seller, 20 mi. from my
home, asking price is $5,600 obo, 100,000 mi. We've checked dealer's retail
prices for the same basic vehicle in the area and we're getting $7,500 to
$8,000, some with 3 to 6 mo. warranty. My husband thinks we should buy the
private seller car if we can get it for $5,000, even if for any reason we can't
take it to our mechanic first. He feels the $2,500 to 3,000 "saved" would
almost certainly cover any problem this car would initially have, especially if
it drives nice/looks well cared for. My mom and I disagree with him and feel
it's considerably more risky to buy a vehicle this way. I appreciate any
opinions pro or con regarding this matter. ASAP please, as my husband wants to
look at this vehicle tomorrow.
