Default diagnosis of knocking under dashboard - 04-09-2007 , 11:04 AM

Hi

Just paying a quick visit to this newsgroup, prior to taking the car
to the garage.

It's a renault megane, about 5 years old, and when turning on the
electrics (ie before even turning on the engine) there's a
knocking/straining noise coming from under the dashboard towards the
base of the window.

It -sounds- like a motor of some kind is straining to do something.
After a few moments it stops and everything is (or appears to be) aok.
It's been doing it for a few weeks now, and isn't getting worse.

On this sketchy info, any suggestions as what it is that might be
wrong?

Maurice

Dodgy ventilation fan motor? Try changing the fan speed and see if this
affects the noise

Just a wild guess. Some sort of servo valve in the heater circuit?
Mike.

There is a known fault on Renaults, the motor driving the heating flap goes
internaly wrong, continually driving the flap round and round with a steady
thumping noise. Only cure is a replacement unit.

Well, that's what I'm going to suggest to the mechanic when I take it
in to the garage, in the hope of not appearing to know f*** all about
cars! (When people ask me what kind of car I've got, I tend to reply
'a green one' which gives them an indication that I'm not going to be
able to contribute much to an auto discussion!)

Thanks :-)

M
