All three types are 'proper' so don't be too hard on yourself. It's a matter of opinion which is best but many people swear by the split wedge type because there are no moving parts to get damaged. |

Two hammers have worked for me plenty of times. Nothing mythical about it. Try reading the original post. But two hammers just give twice the opportunity to damage something. What's wrong with using a puller? |

I had a split outer CV boot, looked like a simple job to replace in the Haynes manual. Purchased a fork shaped balljoint separator tool and set to work. A few hammer blows later, I had a successfully separated track rod from the hub, but I also had a somewhat worse for ware rubber shoe that sat between the balljoint and the hub. At the time I decided not to play around with it too much. Because me poking it gently with a screw driver might cause further damage, where as a ton of car bumping and grinding on it will leave it untouched ![]() I'm guessing there must be 100's of guys like me, hammering the living crap out of this joint on Saturday mornings. Have manufactures made this an easy component to replace? Or do I need to book my car in to get a new shoe pressed into the ball joint (or just a new track rod end)? Regards, Tim |

I'VE BEEN REPAIRING VW AND OTHER RIDES FOR 9 YEARS AND IF YOU ARE TRUE TO YOU AIM AND APPLY PRESSURE TO THE JOINT TO BE WACKED IT SHOULD TAKE ONE HIT. IT IS A USEABLE METHOD. GUESS IT JUST DEPENDS ON WHO IS SWINGING THE TOOLS. |

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dave Plowman (News)" dave (AT) davenoise (DOT) co.uk> saying something like: Two hammers have worked for me plenty of times. Nothing mythical about it. Try reading the original post. But two hammers just give twice the opportunity to damage something. What's wrong with using a puller? Ah, but on those occasions when you don't have a puller, and it's Sunday and the nearest place to get a puller is 30 miles away... you get the picture. Done carefully nobody gets hurt and the leetle ruvver booties stay intact. |
