It is good money, but you need good money to set it all up in the first
place, so I don't begrudge scrappies or anyone else for profiting from scrap
vehicles.

What else are they *supposed* to do? Since when have scrappies been a
charity?

You patently have no idea how much it costs to become an officially
recognised vehicle dismantler these days, or how difficult it can be to get
permission to set up as one in the first place.

That, and you left the stereo in... 'Stupid boy, Pike'

Eh, well they could give people a *little* bit more for their old cars? Is
that not possible?

That really doesn't make sense. It's good money but you need good money so
it's ok. Well that's that cleared up then. Not.

Not only that, they've got to store it, maintain the site (which ain't
easy these days 'cos the Environment Agency are hot on leaking oil etc),
deal with the residue, have sufficient cars in stock to attract
customers even though some of those cars won't make money etc.

If you were to advertise all the bits on eBay and break it yourself and
cost how much time you put into it and cost the diposal of the unwanted
bits and the space you stored it on while it all drifted away I bet it'd
be several hundred quid.

And then there's the fucking great dog to feed.

Oh, and anyone who pays a scrappy to take a vehicle away isn't haggling
enough. Last year I got £30 for an old Maestro with half the interesting
bits missing.
Haggle harder.

they were saying :

It does to me.

OK, so you've spotted a niche in the market with excellent profit margins -
why don't you exploit it, and set up in competition to that yard? After
all, you think you can pay more for the raw materials and charge less for
your sales, so you'll have no shortage of business, right? And still make
an excellent profit, you reckon.

Odd how it makes perfect sense to those of us With Clue.

That really doesn't make sense. It's good money but you need good money so
it's ok. Well that's that cleared up then. Not.

I'll explain a bit more then:
To set up a legal, decent scrap yard in a sensible area you would need a
minimum of about 200,000 pounds, therefore you can reasonably expect to get
a large amount of return on your money, which is why they charge for bits
and no doubt the total income from some cars is quite good.

Do you or anyone you know, work or invest and NOT expect a good return?
