Default Help Please - 04-09-2007 , 03:31 PM

Hi
I have an old Rover Vitesse, 2.0L DOHC petrol turbo.
About 9 months ago, always after driving 10 miles, the car would suddenly
start to almost stall ie loss of power, however if I switched the ignition
off it would the be ok for about another 5 miles before it would start
again. I went to three garages, one said it was the catalytic converter, one
the fuel pump, one a problem with the electronics. One guy referred me to a
specialist in this type of problem - I was told that the top end gets gunged
up and causes severs misfiring / compression problems. I was told to drop
the oil, flush out and replace with 5grade oil. I was very surprised when
this was done - the problem disappeared. However over this weekend I went up
to the lake district - after 60 miles the problem re-occurred. On the way
back on the M6/M62 I was having to pull onto the hard shoulder - stop and
switch off the ignition for 10secs - drive off (all ok) for about 10 mins,
then stop again - a complete nightmare. Any help much appreciated (on the
basis that I could probably have expensive items unnecessarily replaced by a
garage)

First thing is to try a new rotor arm.

Next would be the wiring to the crank sensor

next replace the crank sensor

I used to have a Rover 827SLi that exhibited the same symptoms and I spent
more than £800 over about 5 months, replacing all sorts of sensors, ignition
parts and other stuff. In the end - if I remember correctly - it was a worn
engine mounting that was allowing the engine to move just enough to wear
through some wiring harness or other, causing a short-circuit that somehow
made the engine cut out.

It's all in the dim and distant past, and my memory isn't what it once was,
but it's worth checking for something like that.

I've had something similar when the petrol tank wasn't venting. I had
to cut the rubber seal on the filler tank in the end to avoid getting
too much of a vacuum. The other thing is it could just think it's
getting too hot.
