mk3 1.8 vw golf,idle going up an down

Can someone please help. when i sit in idle,my revs go up an down
between 800-1000,why would this be happeneing? How can i fix the
problem?

Single pointer? (75 bhp version) replace the stepper motor unit (idle
microswitch on the end of the plunger is knackered).
