Default Mondy Gutless Shudder - 10-01-2005 , 01:50 PM

HI,

Wonder if anyone can help out with this one.

Just bought a 1997 (R) Mondeo (1.8 16v LX Saloon since you ask) and I am
getting 2 things

1. Airbag Light Flashes three times - pause - three times etc.

2. On acceleration there is quite a bit of shudder and shake in the lower
rev range for each gear. Once it gets higher the shudder goes. This is
coupled with a general feeling of gutlessness to the engine power.

Spark Plugs look OK and I have adjusted the throttle cable but to no avail.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had similar.

All the best

Drivers/Front passengers airbag - shared wiring fault. Probable causes
-wiring, drivers or passengers airbag.

Only way to reset it is to fix it.

Check for the HT leads too, and don't fit pattern ones, these are very
prone to leakage on No.3 and 4 plugs. Look for black burn marks on the
ceramic of the plugs.

If they are OK, then unfortunately you probably have the good old
sticking valves problem. Try a *good* injector cleaner, and use 5w/30
oil. Failing that, it's a head off and new bits job.

I fixed enough of them.

The pre-tensioner wiring under the front seat(s) is a bit manky. Try
unplugging and re-seating the multiplug.

I had this after I jammed an atlas under the passenger seat, and it knocked
the plug.

If it were high revs, under load, I'd say it was definitely plug lead
problems, but given the problems this engine has with plugs & leads, I'd
replace all 4 plugs *and* leads with Ford OEM parts. Do *not* get Halfords
or pattern parts.

Pete.

Sorry Pete, bit of confusion there. The shudder is in the higher rev range
(I meant when you first go into gear) and dies off as the car speeds up and
the revs drop again.

Had a look on ford TIS and found a bulletin aboutthe airbag light thing with
a rectification procedure.

I'll take your advice on the plus and leads.

All the best

F

Thanks again

I'll take your advice on the plugs and leads

Yes, indeed.
