Default Conned by a garage. - 05-10-2007 , 07:52 PM

Hi

A friend of mine has a 8 month old Vauxhall Mariva.

His back LCD light has failed on the milometer?

It is under warranty, but they want to charge him £105 as they say bulbs are
not included in the warranty...

This I feel is crappy and more importantly, I don't feel it is a bulb, the
LCD is normally back lit and I would imagine would have to be replaced as
one unit????

Can anyone confirm, 1. If it is a changeable bulb, and 2. Should be under
warranty?

Many thanks in advance,
Phil

I expect it is the same as vectra lcd mileometer, it is a bulb, it is a
little awkward to change. Yes, it should be under warranty, but is probably
under the exclusion list. Make a big noisy fuss and they will cave in.

An hour's labour, probably, since it's a dealer.

Would you expect a headlight or indicator bulb to be a warranty item?

Of course it's a bulb.

General rule of thumb... if it's likely to go wrong in the warranty
period, it will be excluded. Bulbs most certainly will be, and I guess
this will be a bulb behind the LCD.

My wife's Micra recently had to have new brake discs. With only 6k on
the clock I've never seen such badly worn discs. Googled and found it
was a stock fault.

Dealer didn't want to know, wasn't covered by warranty as any brake
parts are excluded. They showed me a list of exclusions. Now pads and
shoes I can understand, but new discs after 6k, surely that's not
normal?

Anyway, changed the discs myself and took them to task over the fact
that they hadn't actually indicated that there were any exclusions in
the warranty at the time of selling me the car. They had a leaflet to
hand out to customers but hadn't given me one.
Eventually they caved in and I got a cheque in the post!

I can readily believe it on anything, depending on driving style.

Disks are consumables these days, don't forget. I reckon on two sets of
pads to one set of disks on the XM.

Modern disc/pad combinations do tend to result in the discs wearing just
about as fast as the pads - although most will last for two sets of pads.

But I'd say 6k is a *very* short life for pads anyway - unless the car is
driven very badly.

Or not driven much & they're allowed to go rusty.

Then it would be out of warranty?

Have you seen how quickly a modern disc rusts?
