Default Transmission to drive shaft seal easy to replace? - 05-12-2007 , 02:03 PM

I appear to have oil coming from the transmission to the part of the
drive shaft that directly connects into the transmission on my Punto (MK
II).

I've removed a drive shaft before using the process in Haynes. They
recommend removing at the inner CV boot, therefore you don't remove the
rod that goes into the transmission. I can't find any sections covering
replacing this seal.

Should it be easy to remove this part and will the oil seal sit directly
behind it? Any specialist tools required beyond the usual tools for
removing a drive shaft?

Regards,

Tim

Nope. Prise out old seal, gently tap in new one. Use something with a
large face to tap the new seal in - I use a 3/8 extension bar. Also
remember to wipe a bit of oil on the inside of the seal so it doesn't
grab on the shaft when it first rotates.

Purchased the seal and it doesn't look as sturdy as I expected.
Actually I'm not sure what I expected, but I'm surprised that it lasted
as long as it did. Thanks for the tip about the oil, probably wouldn't
have done this come to think of things, except I'd probably have already
been covered in transmission oil.

Tim
