Default Bollocks. VAG strike again, twice in one day. - 03-29-2007 , 01:03 PM

Ah, my beloved Mk2 GTi decided today was a good day to knacker not just one
but two piston rings.

Upon checking the compression these were the readings.

Dry.

No1 - 45 psi.
No2 - 30 psi dropping slowly to 0
No3 - 115 psi
No4 - 115 psi

Wet

No1 - 110 psi
No2 - 110 psi
No3 - 118 psi
No4 - 118 psi

So it looks like I'm going to be fitting a 2.0 block sometime this weekend.
Oh good. I'm so happy.

In the meanwhile I got my hands on a '99 Audi A6 V6 TDi Avant, which has
developed a serious lack of go. I think the fly by wire throttle thingy is a
bit fucked, it revs ok until its under load.. then it's slower than an
Atlantean bus with low compression and flat tyres. I'm about to have a
GooglefestT to see if there's an easy cure for that...

The Merc is still mid-head gasket surgery so I can't even use it in the
meantime.

Bollocks, buggery titwank. I am getting seriously pissed off with superior
German machinery, having said that, the Audi has at least got soft-touch
everything, it's even got a soft-response throttle at the moment...

Aha ... Liverpudlian man wants a Rover 416Si that'll keep him going and
doesn't blow head gaskets/pistons.

Erm, the VR6 is way too heavy to be sticking up front in a MkII Golf.

The best conversions are 2lt 16v from a MkIII or a 1.8T from a MkIV,
'cos they don't make the car a nose-heavy, under-steering heap of shit.

Not right now, Dude...

At present my fleet is a Mk1 Golf GTi with no MOT (this is also not exactly
easy to get to, it's up a friends path and he ain't local), the Audi with
about 40 bhp, the Mk2 in dire need of an engine transplant, the 190E with a
semi-stripped motor and bugger all else.

The Merc will take longer than the Golf to fix, the Golf is an easy repair
provided I can find a decent ABB motor tomorrow, the Audi will have to
wait... at the moment I'd love another Rangie but I ain't got room or spare
cash..

The point is I need my lovely Golf back, upgrading it to a 2.0 will work out
slightly cheaper than rebuilding the 1.8 and is piss easy, requires no
faffing about changing bloody fuseboxes and dash clocks, looks pretty
standard and gives me more torque. It'll also bolt in.

I'd love to throw a VR6 lump in it, or even the G60 lump, but that'd take
more than about 4 hours from start to finish.

I might VR6 it next year just for the noise. I'll fit damped grab handles
while I'm at it.
