Got a new heater return hose this morning, and broke the heater feed
hose fitting it. Bollocks, that'll be £19 quid. So far nearly £40 in
heater hoses alone.

Changed plug leads, dizzy cap etc and now it's sweet as a sweet
thing. Took it for its first maiden run - accompanied after first full
throttle run by the oil pressure buzzer. Fucksticks.

Then realised I'd bought an oil filter for the 1.8 - not for the 2.0.
Bought a 2.0 oil filter and the buzzer stopped and the oil pressure
light went out.

Thrashed it like a red headed stepchild. There's the bloody buzzer
again. Rang tame VW genius who informed me I'd probably shoved way too
much
oil pressure through both oil pressure switches when I had the wrong
oil filter on. "Change the senders, if the light comes on you'll be
needing an oil pump. Only cheap, but this cheap little conversion is
getting expensive innit?"

Changes senders - nicked 'em from the block and head I had 'spare'.
Problem solved.

Would I do it again? Probably, the thing GLF for a Mk2 Golf and
feels more torquey than the Howdi!. According to the MFA it's not
much worse on fuel than it was as a 1.8.

Thing is, I'm now half tempted to put a 2.0 16v in the Mk1. Somebody
stop me!

Sounds great do you have any pictures of this nice sound car ?
Yup.

HOW FUCKING MUCH? Something special about them that can't be done with
generic length of hose?

Cheaper than a new engine..

The heater hoses are a bloody nightmare on Mk2's, the return hose is not
that mental, but it bends a couple of times and isn't the best thing in
the world to change due to being tucked right up behind half the world on
the bulkhead, the heater feed hose changes internal diameter from about 1
1/2 inch ID at the head to 1 inch at the heater matrix and bends twice in
the process - it's so close to the return hose when it's at the bulkhead
that you have to remove it to change the return - which means bending it -
which when it's 18 years old is likely to cause a fracture, or a few in
the case of this one.

All sorted now anyway, goes well, does 42 mpg if driven sensibly and is
good fun to drive.

Next plan is a set of Billy Steins finest bobble reducers, then VR6 hubs,
discs, calipers, driveshafts, lower wishbones and rear axle with a set of
nice 5 stud Mk4 GTi rims.
You sick bastard. Get some 5 stud BBSs or something.

That is another option. I'm trying to keep it looking pretty standard but
with a twist.

I'd be severely tempted to take the GTI trims off that, dehole the doors
etc. But I wouldn't because I'm still mentally scarred by the experience of
flatting my car for months on end. Only to find some imperceptible until
painted dents in the driver's door...

Nah, I want to leave the bodywork as standard as possible. The only things I
might do to the body - excluding paint - are possibly Mk4 handles and quite
likely G60 arches.

Noooooo!!! The mk1 is in completely original nick isn't it? Obviously,
more power = good thing, but surely modding will destroy
it's value?

Hidden power is a good thing, the Howdi short block 2.0 would be invisible
to the untrained eye ;-)
Heh. That IS a convincing argument..

It is too nice to mod really though.
Yay.

I'm trying to stop myself asking how much you are asking for it. I'm
not sure I can afford the SWMBO tax on another car..

I'll take £1750 for it with 12 months MOT.
Hmmm. Just need to get shut of a passat TDi estate first, and I could
be tempted...
