Default Movers and Shakers... - 12-03-2006 , 07:22 AM

"old habits die hard... old habits die hard"

I couldn't resist - picking it up in a week or so:

http://tinyurl.com/yx9jha

Before I resort to ebay, anyone want an N reg Pug 4061.9TD, leggy
(168k) and which like most of them of that era has a rev counter / fuel
gauge with a mind of its own (1), but which in the last year has had
new brakes all round, a new rad, cambelt, glow plugs, heavy duty
battery and countless other odds and sods replaced plus a recent oil /
filters service, most of which I have the receipts for, plus every MOT
since new to back the mileage up.

It's not mint - a couple of fag burns in the seats, the steering wheel
is showing wear, the vinyl on the passenger airbag has started to curl
up at the corners (another usual 406 niggle in old age) and if I were
keeping it much longer I'd probably spend an afternoon giving it a
decent wet valet, as it's not so much grubby inside, it just looks a
bit jaded.

That, and it has couple of scuffs on the rear bumper, but for the money
it's no dog either, always starts first time and drives very well -
leccy roof / front windows / mirrors, nice bright headlights etc.

Has tax til March, and it'll have a full MOT as of Thursday .

£595 - my mate is currently borrowing it and taking it for its MOT on
Thursday, so pics will be available after then.

Picking the Rover up from oop north as well, so might even be able to
deliver it up anywhere between Kent and up as far as Manchester /
Liverpool so long as you *definitely* want it, no haggling when I get
there.

This or the Golf have to go.

(1) Clocks made by Sagem - no shocker really then, eh.

That looks tidy for the age and stuff - although I hate auctions that show
no mileage :-) Cheap though, some wedge has been spent on the engine. You
should put a pair of buckets in instead of those standard seats and a nice
Momo wheel as well - just to complete the trackness.

123k... 1500 miles since the rebuild, at which time it also had a
complete clutch kit.

Was apparently built to take part in a run down to and round
Nurburgring that never happened.

It's not as cheap as final bid it achieved on there. ;-)

But cheap enough given the spec.

Maybe. The guy who had the Rallye off me fitted buckets, and I found
them uncomfortable when I used it - the amount of vibration you got
through them when ragging it down a bumpy backroad meant you had to
back off to see where you were going, and I intend to use this for more
than just trackdays.

Damn, exactly what I could have done with. I'm in the mood for changing
cars at the moment.

Again?

You're almost as bad as me. ;-)

*Might* sell it on at some stage in the new year, depending on whether
or not I piss off down under.

Given the value of cars in Oz and the fact it costs about £750 to
export one over there, so long as there are no SVA equivalent nasties
you could come unstuck on, I'm debating whether or not to keep hold of
something to get shipped over once I've settled in.

Yep

I like the BX, but it's been pissing me off lately, plus I rarely use it any
more as I now get the bus to work. A Rover would be *slightly* more
sensible. What I'm really after is a decent Swift GTi again, as it'll be
perfect as an ocassional car because of the cheap tax, insurance and running
costs. But still has a bit of a giggle factor. Then again, I think an SD1
might be a good move as petrol costs aren't so much of an issue

Give me a shout if you do decide to sell it

BTW, you were right. The nice death rattle from the CRX were the valves
- adjusted them today (all of them bar one were too tight) and it's
much improved.

Oh, and the one valve that wasn't too tight? It was way to loose and
the locknut had been tightened by gorilla-wivva-toothache. It popped
out of its seat when I tried to undo the locknut. And yes, I *was*
turning it the right way[1]. Anyway, I got it back in without having to
take the cam out.

[1] Yes I know, this isn't really helping my reputation as a mechanic.

Aye.

The overall spec (rollcage, stripped, lowered, rebuilt balanced and
lightened lump), together with my well documented fetish for these,
plus the, what I consider to be a bloody giveaway, price for it given
all the above and the fact it's coming with a years ticket, proved too
much even for me to resist. :-)

Excellent.

Good stuff.

We'll definitely have to meet up once I've picked mine up - should be
the weekend after next.

Sounds like a plan.
