Default n00b Question: Neons - 02-29-2004 , 05:37 PM

Hiya,
Im an ABSOLUTE n00b so all help is appreciated. Im getting hold of a K
reg escort and wanted just to put some *subtle* white neons underneath the
sides for when Im bored and driving home on a saturday night. Whats a good
brand to go for & what problems will I have in terms of:-

* Fitting when I have no automotive experience
- * Cost of getting a garage to do it
- * Is it hard to rig a switch in the cab to jus turn the damn thing off if
I see cops
which brings me onto
* Are they legal???
* Do they affect performance i.e. increase alternator drain & chance of
stalling when declutching quickly?

Feel free to jus dump me onto a good URL.

~Graham

oh no i feel a flaming coming on, to be honest mate that was one of my first
posts here and well there shite to be honest, they can break easy. if the
escort is standard people laugh, cops tend to get a bit up tight bout them,
there a bastard to find somewhere under the car to secure them to, they use
fuck all power really (well the LED tube type do anyway)

i had one which i wired into the boot on my cav when the bulb went, was
pretty cool but on the outside hmm doubt i'd ever think of doing it, to much
weight

Neons are not big, not clever and will not impress any female. Do not REPEAT
NOT ever consider them again. I cannot stress enough what a complete and
utter knob jockeying twat you will look driving around in 'neon'd' car.

People will laugh at you.

Not especially. You'll need a switch, a relay and some wire. Pretty
standard stuff.

Quote:
* Are they legal???
Unfortunately, subject to the usual lighting regs. Completely illegal on
the grounds of taste tho, and no doubt the colour will clash with your
washer jet LEDs as well.

Because declutching quickly in a K reg Escort is *so* impressive ?

of the bhp with someone 1/2 my age at the wheel ... who thinks its
fast.
.....Because its got blue neons on.

If the car is otherwise standard, it'll look highly amusing

Go and watch The Fast And The Furious movie - THAT is the sort of car you
need, to "get away with" neons.

It's pretty easy. Drill holes. Screw neons inplace. Connect wires.

Course not - just run your wires via the switch.

Yep, as long as the lights themselves are not visible from outside the car.
The "glow" is fine, but you mustn't be able to see the tubes.

Er, no.

Don't do it. Neons look great on great cars.. they look absolutely awful on
average cars.

If you happen to trade the escort in for a highly modified Skyline, whack
them underneath as the finishing touch, it'll look ace. Don't put them on an
escort... please don't.

Cops don't worry (generally) if the tube itself isn't visible. I had
Neons under my CX, which has chassis rails substantially in from the
car's sill, and the only cop that ever took an interest complimented me
on the car and the standard of work I'd done. OTOH, it could just be
because it was on a Citroen CX that wasn't exactly a boy-racer mobile.

Neons look stupid on most cars. I'm considering installing tubes on the
inside of the door trim, at the base. on the Sera - so when you open the
door, the lights come on and 'sweep' up as you lift the doors. There's
nowhere on the chassis to install them.

the driver just phoned from Newmills! *runs around*)
