. I'm currently paying Voda 25 quid a month in return for 200
minutes, Stop the clock, 200 texts and it looks like free GPRS, which
is nice, as it means I can always read the Telegraph on the shitter.

I pay Voda £27 a month for 200 minutes and 500 texts :-) The GPRS
time comes off you free texts, 1 text = so many Kb.

I see - I use all of a text a day. Just rang em and badgered em - keep
the same handset and plan, 12 month contract, 9 months half price, and
a free SE Bluetooth headset, so I can look a twat but evade arrest.
Quite pleased with that.

The not being arrested bit or looking like you're part of the Borg
collective?

For what it's worth I don't see myself when I wear my headset, so I can
live with it...

Not getting nicked. OTOH it's very unlikely if you only phone people
around shift changes...

I suppose, or if you leave the handset off.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know of a decent PAYG deal?
I've got a rubber phone I use for outdoors stuff and I'd like to not
have to bother swapping SIMs.

PAYG on Vodafone or full stop?

Any of them. Not going to be used for much text, just odd calls home
etc.

For odd calls, something where the voucher never expires perhaps? I use
Virgin Mobile. I've also discovered that their international calling
charges are reasonable too.

What's coverage like? If I'm using the rubber phone, it's possible that
I'll be making the call in the middle of nowhere.

Virgin piggyback the T-Mobile network. Coverage is at least partially
dependent on the handset. My Nokia 6230 seemed to work almost anywhere, the
6230i was fussier, my Tungsten W was better than both. My current W300i is
between the Nokias.

Might be worth doing.

I really should get some kind of proper handsfree in the car now. Phone has
loudspeaker function that works quite well, so really just an actual holder
for the phone would do I reckon...

Well, as the Octavia has only got a crappy goodmans MP3 headunit,
either if I keep it, or when I change it, there is going to be a Parrot
Rhythmn'n'Blue going in.
Phone and headunit, Handsfree and GPS. All dead cool.

Different tariffs for multisim.

On the other hand, you could use all your remaining free minutes and stop
the clock to phone yourself for ages at the end of each month if you could
be arsed and probably do quite well heh.

I'm sure the Government reckon we shouldn't rely on a battery powered 'phone
for emergencies, but like, have they tried a land line these days?!

Change networks to Vodafone, they are the best for reception, get a PAYG sim
card and then activate Stop the clock, callling abroad, and friends and
family.

I was on Voda for 5 years. Only had 2 upgrades from them (because I
started out with the carphone warehouse, who sold me to Martin Dawes,
who were bought by BT Lumina, who sold me back to Vodafone) because
although I was on Voda airtime all the time, nobody wanted to take of
customer service.
Eventually, once I was on Voda, and had waited a year since my last
upgrade, I phoned and asked about 3g Accounts. They didn't have anything
less than £50 a month on 3g and all the phones with a reasonable cost
(nothing free) had only one camera. So to video call, you needed to spin
the camera round all the time (say something, spin round and watch what
caller says, spin round say something). Voda CS didn't see that as
problem during a video call only having one camera on the back of the
handset. Twin camera, or spinable camera phones all were £150-250+
upgrade chargeable, as well as being tied to a new contract.
The best they would move on, when I asked for my PAC was "We can do you
3G on a tariff it wouldn't normally be available for you if you buy the
most expensive upgrae handset".

Told them to comeup with something better and ring me while I wait for
the PAC in the post. They didn't, so I left and got £50 free airtime (to
cover the cost of the £49.99 phone), 200 anytime with a bonus 200 off
peak for the life of the contract, and for the first year, 1 hour of 3g
video calls, and 50 meg of data access free each month. Was a good first
year of that contract.

I think 3 piggy back onto 02 or Oranges network for 2g traffic when you
aren't in their area.
So you make a 2g call to the emergency services, telling them to ring
you back as you don't have much credit, then when they call you to check
your situation, you make money from 3 while you are doing it.

You generally don't need to call out moutain rescue if you've got a landline
convenient...
