I've just made and fitted a unit which fades in and out the interior
lights on the SD1. Would that do?

Heh, does it turn 'em on when you take out the ignition key though? Does
it? Does it? Eh? Eh?
Oh yus. And off after a 5 second delay if you switch on again.

Busy on here...

Whenever I come in for a look, I usually see that the posts are
buried somewhere deep in a thread where it ceased having a point
and is usually a scrap between two people who have long
forgotten the original thread.

I don't see the point in contributing to that kind of stuff.

Heheh. Isn't pointless scraps the point?

Only if you're one of the pugilists.

That mate who bought the MX5 has decided to get a hard top.

They're cheap eh ?

Not.

He's paying £300 for one painted to suit , but it's in Essex which
ain't exactly Kirky, but I guess a hardtop is a good idea. 156 now
for sale, looking for MK1 MX5 in red :-)

300 quid for a hardtop is a bloody bargain if it's in decent condition,
OEM ones are usually nearer the 500 mark.

But they're very useful.

It's scratched to feck.
The seller is a painter, it's £170 as is or £300 painted to his colour code
which seems a fair deal to me.
It has a headlining and a heated screen which is apparently not always the
case.

Another thing to check if your friend hasn't done so is that the car has
the hardware to take the hardtop.

It needs 2 little 'frankenstein' bolts to go onto the shiny bits on the
rear deck and a foot bolted to the car where the B pillar would start so
the hardtop can clip on.

Lots of cars have the bits already, but some don't.

This probably isn't the cheapest way to get it:

Wow, do you have much use for a hardtop in WA?

Too feckin right. Out of the burning sun and the aircon whacked on.

Indeed, but that's what the soft top is for, shirley? The hard top
realistically takes 2 people and several minutes to install/remove. The
soft top goes up or down in under 3 secs.

I use my hard top to keep out the snow and ice and stop the soft top
turning green during winter.

I know it's going to be too cold to put the roof down during the day,
let alone the night.

I am led to believe that warm evenings in sunny countries are ideal for
convertibles, although I imagine it gets chilly in deserty parts of WA
at night.
Ragtops aren't that popular in Oz mainly due to the lack of ozone
protection.

They aren't that popular in sunny/hot countries generally cos of the
inevitability of getting burnt to a crisp as I understand it.

However, I know someone who owns a convertible in Dubai and they
regularly drive with the roof down in the evenings. As do various
convertible users I know of in the likes of Florida and Nevada.

Just wondered if there were advantages to installing a hardtop over
using the perfectly serviceable and standard fit convertible top
somewhere like Western Australia. I notice that it makes my car
slightly stiffer for example.

WA is pretty big mind you, its probably raining in some part of it.

You do need the Frankenbolts, but you can get away without the B-post
clamps. I'm not saying it's clever to do so, but you can and the roof
will stay on the car.

It definitely has the Frankenstein bolts, he told me so.
Clearly he's been on some sort of weird interweb based MX5 type forum thingy
and has learnt the lingo.

He's wanted a ragtop since having a go in David Parr's silver Morgan.

My GTM was exactly like that.
Whenever I did a competitive event, I always drove it with the top on.

I put the hard top on my MX-5 yesterday. It's now officially winter. (c:
We've had it on for the last 3 months but it will probably come off for good
this weekend. The soft top has a tear in the rear window where some fucker
sliced it so need to get that fixed. I really want to keep it in the garage if
we only have the soft top on which means moving some bikes.
