The Iltis is so bad that we were not allowed to drive it faster than the 50kph autorised by the military handbook because it turned over rather easily. The exhaust being at one point less than 2 cm from the plastic petroltank caused also some nice fires. When we were exercising in the Wahnerheide (near Koln) a German Leopard almost drove over us with even noticing. Worse: after the tank was a German Jeep -a G-Mercedes- which pushed us cleanly into the ditch. Adding insult to injury: a soldier from Luxemburg, driving a Hummer, kindly offered to pull us out. Very solidly build the Iltis because when the bloke reversed his Hummer the rope pulled our front bumper off. We were the laughing stock with that stupid thing: every time you went off the pavement with it, mechanics needed a day to clean out the brake drums. Being an officer I had mine, so I drove it out of the barracks, pulled over 500 m further, switched places with the sergeant who was sitting next to the truckdriver (my platoon had Volvo's 6x6 which were faster, far more safe and comfy than the Iltis. Hell, even the full track's (M113) were faster and it was not nice being in a tin box when a 12 Ton Fulltrack is thundering behind you. There are other, nicer methods to kill yourself, less painfull and idiotic too. To me the only use for an Iltis is to put it at 300 yards and practise some LAW's or machine gun on. Yes, I know an Iltis won the Paris-Dakar race, 1980 I think. The years where VW was the first manufacturer in the race, the previous race a Renault 4CV came close to victory. |

Tell you what: get the Audi 1.8T engine here -I'll buy it, it might get a place in the Elise- , come over with the Iltis -I'll buy it for the 20 liters of petrol we will pour over it. And they will shoot at it, drink some cold beer when it burns. How's that for a Kyoto-friendly happening? |

How's that for a Kyoto-friendly happening? But's got transverse leaf springs like the Corvette so the handling will be brilliant. Sure! And it breaths the same air and burns the same fuel... |
