Can you weld stainless steel with a Mig? I seem to think you cant as a Mig
isnt powerful enough. If not what do you use?

With the right wire I think you can but you should have a gas shield on both
sides of the weld and a gas feed mask (preferably not the same gas) as stainless
produces hexavalent chromium gas when welded and it's carcinogenic.

Yeah, and don't look at the arc without some sort of eye protection.

It's bright.

That's pretty much my knowledge exhausted.

To Mr. Gibbs:

Ensure gloves are worn, also. The heat from the blue flame thing is
very, very hot. It can and will burn your hands.
Look for a TIG welder, I think that is what you need.

Andy

I've aquired a free complete Magnex exhuast system for the MR2, but a
hanger has broke off the silencer and made a hole in it. So hopefully
it's a fairly easy repair and we'll have an exhuast worth a few hundred
quid for nothing!
Thanks for all the advice. One of my Dad's mates has the necessary gear (a
good Mig, stainless wire and argon) and is a good welder so I'm gonna get
him to do it. Getting the exhuast Sunday, so with any luck it'll be on the
car in the next few weeks Jobs a goodun!

Me neither, but I wanna learn at some point. Might see if I can do an
evening course and do it properly!

I was going to do one, but it was undersubscribed and cancelled :-(
Shame. I did one at the local farmers college, and it was pretty good,
although farmers tens to use stick rather than mig. A c&g in welding is
an excellent thing to have on a c.v. :-)

The chap running the course was incredibly good - he gave us a demo of
some tig welding, putting a new end on a small stainless pressure vessel
with internal welds, which really showed the difference between
comptetant ameteur and a pro. His welds were *perfect*....

I've just had my 480 welded up and the finish on that is outstanding. He's
rebuilt the lower part of the wheel arch and it looks like it's just come
out the factory!

Can you weld stainless steel with a Mig? I seem to think you cant as a Mig <br />isnt powerful enough.

I'm a welder by trade - been doing it for the last 15 years.

Yes, you CAN weld stainless with a mig. You have two choices ...

1) Either put stainless wire in the mig - the power difference is marginal.

2) You can just use mild steel wire - just make sure you turn the PSI up on the gas as far as you can. Also, make sure that the surface you are welding is VERY CLEAN.

Any rusting in the future will not effect a thick weld and is unlikely to break, as long as the power is up enough, eg. not pigeon shits.

I've found myself a proper welder to do it for me, but thanks for the
advice!!
